Having recently bought the Mandrake Linux Powerpack+ I have finally backed up my document and data files from my ntfs boot and after five years dual booting had the great pleasure of executing the final DOS command my home PC will see – Format C:
It is great when the best things in life really are free. The KDE and Gnome desktops are both slicker, more secure and far more stylish than any MS Windows system and the range and configuration options of apps easily surpasses the Apple offerings.
With Audacity and Rosegarden – audio recording packages are beginning to take shape on open OSes that will be able to satisfy most hobbyist musicians. Neither app is as fully featured as commercial offerings, although in some ways this isn’t too bad a thing as such programmes can have such overwhelming options that the learning curve is really quite steep.
Now the remaining obstacle for many users would be gaming. While the range of free games for linux systems is amazing, most first-person-shooters released commercially don’t get ported. I’ve never been a fan of such games myself, though I still really would love for a GNU/Linux subspace/continuum client to be developed.
